3 Key Changes to U.S. Aluminum Import Policies: What You Need to Know About the February 2025 Proclamation
The three things you need to know about the Aluminum Proclamation (Adjusting Imports of Aluminum into the United States), dated February 12, 2025, which effectively raises the Section 232 aluminum tariffs from 10% to 25%:
- As of March 12, 2025, the Section 232 exclusion process for aluminum articles has been eliminated. Granted and unexpired exclusions with remaining tonnage may be filled until the termination date or until filled, whichever comes first. All pending and new exclusion requests should be assumed to be void.
- As of March 12, 2025, aluminum quota arrangements will be terminated with Australia, Argentina, Canada, Mexico, EU Countries, and the UK.
- Additional 25% tariffs on aluminum derivative articles, to be listed via Annex (published in the Federal Register).
Please note that Russian-origin aluminum articles and aluminum derivative articles, aluminum articles and aluminum derivative articles that are made from aluminum that is cast in Russia, and aluminum articles and aluminum derivative articles that contain primary aluminum that was smelted in Russia, are still subject to an additional 200% tariffs instead of the 25%, per Presidential Proclamation 10522 of February 24, 2023.
