Due to the current economic crisis, many ocean transportation intermediaries (“OTIs”) are unable to collect freight or demurrage charges from cargo owners. To make matters worse, vessel-operating common carriers (“VOCCs”) and OTIs are both dealing with abandoned cargo. In order to address issues of collection and abandonment, OTIs must know the risks and how to avoid and/or mitigate losses before they become catastrophic.
